Foot Movement to Set

This issue's drill is provided by Jim Stone, former Ohio State University Head Women's Volleyball Coach and founder of Volleyball Training Solutions

Player (P) stands balanced and square facing target/coach (C). Coach bounces ball off floor at intervals around a 360 degree circle. Player (P) must move to the ball, square up feet and shoulders to face coach, set the ball back to the coach. Coach controls the tempo and speed of movement by the height of the toss or bounce.

Defending Tips

This issue's drill is provided by Jim Stone, former Ohio State University Head Women's Volleyball Coach and founder of Volleyball Training Solutions

One ball is used. Players (P) begins at end line. Three players go one at a time to play ball tipped by coach (C). Players must start at end line and pursue ball. After ball is played, player returns to end line, next player continues. The ball played by player #1 is kept in play by coach and that ball is tipped to player #2. Drill is complete when the three players keep the same ball in play 10 times in a row. Illustration shows multiple groups going at same time.

Enhancing Pass to Attack Skills

This issue's drill is provided by Jim Stone, former Ohio State University Head Women's Volleyball Coach and founder of Volleyball Training Solutions

The drill is initiated with a serve. The Servers (S) will enter ball from both sides of the net and will alternate. The sequence of drill is: serve, pass, set, attack. As soon as ball is attacked then repeated with other side serving. Middle hitter (MH) will run quick attack, 1, 31, back 1 or slide. Passers (P) must pass the serve to allow quick attack. Aim for five sets of 4 successful quick attacks in a row. Scoring offers lots of options: Plus for quick attacks, minus for serving or passing errors.

Out of System Setting

This issue's drill is provided by Jim Stone, former Ohio State University Head Women's Volleyball Coach and founder of Volleyball Training Solutions

The purpose of this drill is to work on the setter moving to an "out of system" pass and set a ball to left front hitter that can be attacked. The Target (T) stands 5' off net and 5' in the court. This target area provides a margin of error for Setter (S) and is also an easy ball to attack for the hitter. The Setter starts at 3m line and will return to the 3m line after each set. Coach (C) tossed the ball to area either 20' off net or 30' off net.Setter will move to toss, make a good high set to the target, then return to 3m line. Drill is complete when setter makes 10 good sets. The coach will control the tempo of the drill by how quickly or how high the ball is tossed.

Five Person Overhead Passing Drill

This issue's tip is provided by Jim Stone, former Ohio State University Head Women's Volleyball Coach

There are five players. One is a setter
in the appropriate position. Player A
and B both have a ball. Both balls will
be in play. First contact, player A to
setter (1). Next contact (2) setter to LF
player. Contact (3) is from player B to
setter. Contact (4) is backset to RF.
Contacts (5 & 6) put ball back to players A and B. There are two triangles going on at the same time. The setter front sets in one of the triangles, and will backset in the other triangle.

Options are: (a) Players A and B will move after their contact to sideline or endline then return to receive pass, or, (b) setter will reverse where they set in each triangle.

Purpose of Drill: players must all set accurately and at the same height or the timing and rhythm of the drill is lost.
