Coaching Tip: Doug Beal's Tips For Player Success

Doug Beal, Coach of the 1984 Gold-Medal-winning U.S. Men´s Olympic Team and current CEO of USA Volleyball, outlines his traits a winning volleyball athlete should cultivate:

  • Respect the other team's athletes.
  • When you block a ball, turn around and celebrate with your teammates.
  • Don't play them, play yourself.
  • If you only play to win, you limit yourself. You can do better! Play every ball as if it was the most important play of the game.
  • Don't watch the other players to see what they're doing. Don't worry about the score. Play your very best, every play, and the rest will take care of itself.
  • Celebrating together builds enthusiasm and confidence.
  • Playing against yourself builds skill and sportsmanship.

Drill for Success: Five Person Overhead Passing Drill

This issue's tip is provided by Jim Stone, former Ohio State University Head Women's Volleyball Coach

drills for success tips image

There are five players. One is a setter
in the appropriate position. Player A
and B both have a ball. Both balls will
be in play. First contact, player A to
setter (1). Next contact (2) setter to LF
player. Contact (3) is from player B to
setter. Contact (4) is backset to RF.
Contacts (5 & 6) put ball back to players A and B. There are two triangles going on at the same time. The setter front sets in one of the triangles, and will backset in the other triangle.

Options are: (a) Players A and B will move after their contact to sideline or endline then return to receive pass, or, (b) setter will reverse where they set in each triangle.

Purpose of Drill: players must all set accurately and at the same height or the timing and rhythm of the drill is lost.

Rules Trivia

Marcia Alterman, NCAA Rules interpreter, explains what happens if there are simultaneous foot faults and position faults.

FACT or FICTION? Team A's server commits a foot fault, and at the same time the second referee whistles a position fault (overlap) on Team B. The referees should award a replay.

FICTION! NCAA Rule 13.2.2.2 states: "If an illegal service occurs and the opposing team commits a position fault at the moment of service, the serving team is penalized with a loss of rally".
