In every era of college volleyball, there are defining seasons, those rare years when the sport gives us something bigger than competition.
In 2024–25, that story belonged to Penn State Head Coach Katie Schumacher-Cawley.
As her team chased a national title, Katie was quietly fighting a battle of her own. Diagnosed with stage II breast cancer just weeks into the season, she began treatment immediately. Yet she never stepped back. She never stopped coaching. She showed up to every practice and match with the same calm, steady presence her players depended on.
And in December 2024, she became the first woman to win the NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball National Championship as a head coach.
Katie never framed her journey around adversity. When we asked her how she defines courage, she put it simply:
“Getting out every day and being the best you can be… staying positive and moving forward, even on the hard days.”
That mindset guided the Nittany Lions through one of the most unforgettable runs in collegiate volleyball, culminating in a reverse sweep over Nebraska that will be remembered for decades.
Her team drew strength from her fight. She drew strength from them.
Throughout treatment, nearly three hours from home, Katie balanced coaching, family life, and travel with a support system she describes as essential.
Her daughters, husband, extended family, staff, and players walked the journey with her.
“My team, my three daughters, my husband, and my family supported me every day,” she said. “They made everything easier.”
That openness shaped the team’s culture. Their core value, Bigger than Us, became more than words on a wall. It became their identity.

When Penn State claimed the national championship, Katie’s focus remained on her team. Cutting down the net, she felt immense pride.
“I was so proud of the team and so proud to be part of Penn State.”
It was a moment that represented not just victory, but resilience, unity, and belief.

Katie Schumacher-Cawley led with a steady hand, a calm presence, and a standard that never wavered, qualities that guided her team through a historic season and left a lasting impact on the sport.
Her courage inspired her players.
Her leadership made history.
And her journey continues to resonate across the volleyball community.
We are proud to recognize Katie Schumacher-Cawley as the 2025 Sports Imports Courage Award Winner.
