Sports Imports and SOAR: Elevating Women in Volleyball Coaching

At Sports Imports, we are committed to providing top-quality equipment and empowering the volleyball community. This mission extends beyond the court and into the lives of those who dedicate themselves to the game: the coaches. Our partnership with SOAR (Support, Openness, Advocacy, and Renewal) reflects this commitment—a collaboration designed to foster a supportive and empowering environment for women coaches in volleyball.

A Shared Vision for Empowerment

Founded by LSU Women’s Volleyball Head Coach Tonya Johnson in 2020, SOAR was created to address the unique challenges faced by women in coaching. Tonya envisioned a safe, inclusive space where female coaches could connect, learn, and grow together.

For decades, women in coaching have faced unique obstacles, from breaking into male-dominated spaces to overcoming societal stereotypes. These challenges can feel isolating, as there is no established roadmap—these women are forging new paths. SOAR provides a platform to address these issues head-on, fostering confidence and camaraderie among women in volleyball coaching.

Tonya Johnson explains, “If you recognize and/or have experienced the challenges that are unique to women in coaching, SOAR allows you to explore these issues in a safe environment.” By fostering open dialogue and shared learning, SOAR inspires women to believe in their potential and reach for their dreams.

Why This Partnership Matters

At Sports Imports, we’ve seen firsthand the impact coaches have on athletes, teams, and the broader volleyball community. Coaches are the anchors of development, leadership, and inspiration for countless young athletes. Supporting SOAR is our way of giving back to those who give so much to the sport.

SOAR’s work aligns with our values of excellence, integrity, and community. By sponsoring SOAR, we’re investing in a future where female coaches feel seen, heard, and supported. It’s not just about providing resources or attending events—it’s about being part of a movement that’s reshaping the volleyball coaching landscape. As Tonya Johnson puts it, “It’s important because I want women to stay in coaching. By having a networking system in place, SOAR provides support for those who may be struggling or looking to get out.”

The Emotional Impact of SOAR

For many coaches, SOAR is not just an organization—it is a lifeline. Imagine stepping into a new role, navigating the pressures of a demanding career, often feeling isolated and lacking resources, then confidently walking into a room filled with women who understand the challenges of the profession, ready to share insights, offer advice, and provide a roadmap to navigate the journey. This is what SOAR creates: a space where trust and openness foster a community united by the shared demands and rewards of coaching.

Tonya Johnson shared her personal experience: “The most rewarding part of starting SOAR has been the friendships and support that everyone has been able to make. SOAR gave me the confidence that I needed to go after and get my dream job here at LSU.” Stories like hers highlight the transformative impact of SOAR, both personally and professionally.

As Tonya also notes, “The key challenge for me was just having the confidence to believe in myself and KNOW that I am capable of being a great coach.” Through SOAR, many women are finding that confidence and breaking through barriers that once seemed insurmountable.

Building a Legacy Together

Sports Imports’ partnership with SOAR goes beyond sponsorship—it’s about investing in the future of volleyball. By supporting SOAR, we are fostering a stronger, more inclusive community of coaches who inspire athletes and lead programs at every level of the game.

As Tonya Johnson advises, “The best advice I’ve ever received is to be myself. I don’t have to be anybody else but Tonya!” This commitment to authenticity and self-belief reflects SOAR’s values and resonates deeply with our own vision for empowering leaders in the sport.

A Call to Action

Sports Imports is proud to provide five scholarships to the SOAR Symposium, ensuring more female coaches can access this invaluable experience. By supporting these coaches, we are investing in a stronger, more inclusive community where growth, connection, and leadership thrive.

“At Sports Imports, we recognize that empowering women in coaching is key to advancing volleyball as a sport and as a community. Through our partnership with SOAR, we’re investing in a future where women’s voices and leadership are at the forefront.” – Danielle Calo, CEO, Sports Imports
