As the volleyball community approaches the end of the 2016 season, there is much anticipation for some of the biggest events of the year: the NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Championship and the American Volleyball Coaches Association Convention. 2016 has brought a successful Olympics, the first NCAA Women’s Beach Championships and another year of growth in volleyball. The close of 2016 also signifies an end to a legacy of sorts for USA Volleyball and the volleyball community with the retirement of USA Volleyball CEO Doug Beal.
Doug Beal’s accolades are too numerous to do justice in writing. His impact on the sport we love, is beyond compare. As a player, Beal rose to the highest level of play. In college, he was named a five time All-America for The Ohio State University. He went on to have a stellar career as a member of the US Men’s National Team, where he was named to three U.S. Olympic teams, four NORCECA Zone Championship teams and two World Championship teams.
In 1972 Doug accepted the head coaching position at his alma mater, The Ohio State University. He went on to achieve a long and accomplished career coaching with the United States Men’s National Team where he led the US Team to great successes, including their famous 1984 Olympic Gold.
In 2005, Doug Beal took over the reins of USA Volleyball as Chief Executive Officer. His leadership has been a key determiner in the growth and success of volleyball at all levels. The Junior’s program through USA Volleyball has been foundational in the growth of Men’s and Women’s Volleyball at the collegiate, national and international levels. The Men’s and Women’s Indoor, Beach and Sitting Teams are a force in International play. Volleyball has grown and evolved and Doug Beal’s leadership has been a key component to its success. He is deeply respected by his peers both nationally and internationally.
There is no question that Doug Beal will leave a legacy as one of the most accomplished individuals in volleyball history. His resume is only a piece of why he stands apart. Those who have had the privilege to work with him understand his character is exceptional. As accomplished as Doug Beal is, he exemplifies humility, loyalty, and kindness that is remarkable. He is a marvelous example of a leader.
